Third Party Liability Limits in the US and Canada

You may find it amazing but its perfectly legal to drive around in the US with just a few thousand dollars worth of third party insurance. A bad accident could bankrupt you though!

A car hire firm in Florida can rent out cars with as little as $20,000 third party cover. California's not much better. Make sure you are properly protected!

In the USA , Canada and other parts of the Americas you should consider whether you also need top up liability insurance, available here as 'Supplementary Liability Insurance'.

As you can see below car rental firms in some states need to provide you with as little as $20,000 third party cover (Florida is an example). Any reasonably serious at fault accident this could leave you personally liable for a huge bill - and the legal fees alone in fighting your case could cripple you.

Protection comes in the form of 'Supplementary Liability Insurance' (SLI) policy which will top up the local cover to $1,000,000 or more. These policies are very affordable as the first claim is made on your local car rental policy and then, only if this is insufficient, on the SLI policy meaning claims are only made on more serious, but less frequent cases.

Policies offering both Collision Damage Waiver and SLI for a trip of 60 days are available for as little as £75 (test this on the car hire insurance comparison service), which is normally a fraction of the cost of similar cover from rental firms.

Below is a brief summary of the legal minimum liability limits by state. They are either displayed with separate amounts for bodily injury to each person, all bodily injury & property damage for each accident or some (mostly Canadian states) as a single Combined Single Limit to cover all liability. So for example in California, the minimum cover for a single person being injured would be just $15,000 with the total for all bodily injuries being $30,000 and only $5,000 in property.

Booking a US rental in the UK, or on a UK (.co.uk website) means the car rental agreement will generally (but not always) include cover for Third Party, Collision Damage Waiver and Theft. An excess is not normally charged in the US, but often is in Canada. In either country you will be responsible for damage to windows, tyres, the undercarriage and the roof. Do check your rental agreement carefully so that you understand exactly what cover is being offered, as agreements differ greatly.
